On Tuesday, October 22nd, the 5th and 6th grade ALPS students traveled to William Jewell College.  They were invited to visit campus by the Village Partners Program and Dr. Lori Wetmore. Students have been learning about microloans, microenterprise, and developing countries.  The Village Partners Program at William Jewell works to create sustainable, healthy change through cross-cultural experience, community participation, and partnerships.  While at William Jewell students visited the chemistry and engineering departments. In the chemistry department, Dr. Lori Wetmore and her students shared information and their experiences from the village of Matagua in Honduras. Students learned about the community development projects that the school has been a part of over the years.  One of those projects is a tilapia farm that has been built in the village and is being run cooperatively by many of the village members. Students learned about some of the chemistry involved in making sure the tilapia lagoons were safe for the fish. Students also visited Dr. Taqsim Husnain in the engineering lab.  While in the lab, students witnessed a demonstration of how dams work. Our students were able to make observations, predictions and offer possible solutions to issues caused by the plexiglass stream and dam.  Another fun activity for the students was viewing a video of the village children answering questions that we had sent them weeks early. We ended our trip with lunch in the college cafeteria which was a hit.  Thank you so much to William Jewell College and The Village Partners Program for hosting us!
